- High Efficiency Mat Curing and Carpet Shrinking Oven
Executive Summary
Epcon delivered a custom-designed, high-efficiency oven specifically for mat curing and carpet shrinking operations — combining optimized hot-air flow from both top and bottom (dual-plenum) to ensure uniform heat distribution, efficient moisture removal, and consistent shrinkage/curing across carpet and mat rolls. The solution enables textile and carpet manufacturers to increase throughput, assure product quality (uniform shrink/cure), and reduce energy consumption compared with conventional curing/shrink ovens.
Project Overview
A carpet/floor-mat manufacturer required an industrial-grade oven capable of curing, shrinking, and stabilizing woven or tufted mats and carpets under controlled thermal conditions. The requirements included uniform heat distribution across wide and thick rolls, efficient moisture removal, minimal thermal gradients to avoid damage or uneven shrinking, and energy-efficient operation to support high-volume production. Epcon was selected to engineer and supply a tailored dual-plenum mat-curing and carpet-shrinking oven, optimized for high throughput and consistent quality.
The Challenge
Manufacturing carpets or mats presents unique thermal-processing challenges:
- The bulk and thickness of carpet/mat material make uniform heat delivery difficult: insufficient or uneven heating risks partial shrinkage, distortions, or inconsistent curing.
- Moisture and moisture-inhomogeneities within carpet materials must be removed effectively during curing/shrinking. Failure to dry uniformly can lead to defects after shrinking or curing.
- Traditional ovens may heat only from one side (top or bottom), causing thermal gradients and non-uniform results — especially problematic for thick or heavy carpet rolls.
- High bounce-back temperature, energy consumption and long cycle times can reduce production throughput and increase operational cost.
- The oven must handle varied carpet sizes, densities, and materials with robustness and reliability under continuous industrial operation.
Engineering Requirements
To satisfy the customer’s production, quality, and economic goals, the system design required:
- A dual-plenum hot-air flow design — delivering heated air both from above and below the carpet/mat during processing, to ensure even temperature distribution through the full thickness of the material. This helps avoid hot-spots or cold zones, assures uniform shrink/curing, and reduces defects.
- Adequate air volume, circulation, and temperature control — to ensure efficient moisture evaporation, consistent shrinkage and thermal treatment, even for heavy or dense rolls.
- Industrial-grade construction and controls — for safe, repeatable operation, with temperature regulation, airflow management, and the ability to handle variable load (thickness, width, material).
- Energy-efficiency focus — optimized air/plenum design and insulation to minimize heat losses and reduce fuel/energy consumption despite the high thermal demand of carpet shrinking/curing.
- Flexibility for different mat/carpet sizes and production rates — enabling the manufacturer to process a variety of products without custom ovens for each line.
The Solution
Epcon engineered and delivered a custom dual-plenum mat-curing and carpet-shrinking oven, featuring:
- Top and bottom hot-air plenums — supplying heated air from both above and below the carpet or mat to ensure uniform heating throughout the thickness of the material. This dual flow ensures even shrinkage/curing and prevents thermal gradients.
- Optimized airflow and temperature control — designed to support effective moisture evaporation and even shrink/curing across various mat/carpet densities and materials.
- Robust industrial build — built for continuous operation, with durable materials, appropriate insulation, and process controls to handle varied production demands.
- Turnkey delivery — Epcon supplied design, fabrication, installation support, control commissioning, and testing — providing the customer a ready-to-operate oven tailored to their carpet/mat production needs.
Thanks to this solution, the customer obtains consistent, high-quality shrink/curing results, improved throughput, and lower energy per unit processed compared with older, less optimized ovens.

The Results
After commissioning, the High-Efficiency Mat Curing & Carpet Shrinking Oven delivered:
- Uniform and consistent shrink/curing — carpets and mats processed show even shrinkage and curing across full width and thickness, minimizing defects due to uneven heating.
- Improved production throughput — optimized airflow and efficient heat transfer reduce cycle times compared to less efficient ovens, increasing output capacity.
- Reduced energy consumption per unit — thanks to dual-plenum design and better insulation / heat management, overall energy usage is lower compared with conventional single-sided ovens.
- Greater flexibility and reliability — ability to process different types, sizes, and densities of mats/carpets without custom adjustments; industrial-grade design ensures long-term stable operation under heavy production loads.
- Lower reject / rework rate — improved control translates to higher first-pass quality and less waste, improving margins and reliability of finishing lines.
This project highlights Epcon’s capability to deliver specialized thermal-processing equipment for textile and carpet manufacturing equipment that combines high performance, energy efficiency, and consistent product quality.
